A League of Their Own (1992)
It’s the 1940’s, and World War II is raging on overseas. Hundreds of thousands of men enter into the armed forces, including many Major League Baseball players. At home, Major League Baseball owners have decided to form a women’s league to keep baseball in the public eye. Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) arrives on a small dairy farm in Oregon to recruit catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis). Dottie at first refuses, but later agrees to join the league as long as her sister Kit (Lori Petty) is accepted into the league as well. The pair head to Chicago for tryouts where they are assigned to the Rockford Peaches, with teammates Doris Murphy (Rosie O’Donnell) and Mae Mordabito (Madonna). Former baseball great Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) , is the manger of the team, and couldn’t be less interested in the team, that is until the team begins to win, drawing crowds and media attention from across the country. Dottie shines both at the plate and behind it, with her good looks, power bat, and solid defense. A rivalry soon develops between siblings Dottie and Kit, eventually leading to Kit being traded. The pair inevitably meet in the championship game. This time Kit steals the spotlight, scoring the game winning run. The league is a huge success, and continues on for many years.
